How to Apply for Vienna BioCenter Summer School

Applications are encouraged from students worldwide who are pursuing undergraduate or master’s degrees and have completed at least two years of university study in a Life Sciences-related field, such as Molecular and Cell Biology or Chemistry. Eligibility Criteria of Vienna BioCenter Summer School

  1. Educational Background:
    • You must be studying a degree in a Life Science related subject.
    • Check carefully before starting an application to ensure your degree relates to one of the groups offering a position in the call.
  2. Years of University Study:
    • Completed at least 2 years of university study by 30 June.
    • Consider the following scenarios:
      • (i) Year 3 of a 4-year BA (Hons) or BSc (Hons) in a Life Science related subject.
      • (ii) Year 4 of a 4-year BA (Hons) or BSc (Hons) in a Life Science related subject WITH an acceptance or intention to apply to a Master program (this will be checked later).
      • (iii) Year 1 of a 2-year Master course, MSc in a Life Science related subject.
      • (iv) Year 2 of a US undergraduate Bachelor in a Life Science related subject.
      • (v) Year 2 of a 4-Year BTech (India) in a Life Science related subject.
  3. Research Experience:
    • 3-months research experience is required.
  4. Academic Record:
    • You should have a good academic record.
  5. English Language Proficiency:
    • A high level of English language proficiency is necessary.
  6. Enrolment Evidence:
    • Provide evidence of enrolment in a University program for the current academic year and the next year if possible.
  7. MD Applicants:
    • MDs may only apply if they have completed 3-4 years of their studies and have relevant research experience.
    • They must also intend to study a PhD in a Life Science related subject after completion of their current studies.
  8. Ineligible Studies:
    • The following studies will NOT be considered:
      • Veterinary medicine, medical engineering, agriculture, pharmacy, zoology, food or nutritional science, and any other degrees that do not include lab training or are not related to molecular and cellular biology.

Application Process for Vienna BioCenter Summer School

  1. Online Application:
    • Interested students should complete the online application form.
    • During the application process, applicants will need to specify the names of three lab heads in their order of preference.
    • While we cannot guarantee assignment to a specific lab, we will make our best efforts to accommodate preferences.
    • Applicants will also be required to provide details of their educational and research experience.
  2. Timelines:
    • Call Opens: 1 December
    • Call Closes: 31 January (2359 CET)
    • Results Published: 15 March
    • Summer School Commences: 1 July (or last Friday in June)
    • Summer School Concludes: 31 August (or last Friday in August)

Are letters of reference required?

At the time of application, letters of reference are not required. We may contact the supervisor(s) of shortlisted candidates.

Does the summer school have specific language requirements?

Is there an age limit?

Although there is no strict age limit, students must be studying a Bachelor or Master’s degree, typically indicating relatively young participants.

How much is the application fee?

The summer school does not charge an application fee.

Which documents should I upload?

Please upload your enrollment certificate and transcript of studies and/or exam results for the last years of your course. You will also need to upload proof of enrollment for the next academic year. If this is not possible, provide a personal statement with the programs you have/will apply for. A CV or cover letter is not required.

Do I need to provide translations for documents not in English or German?

Yes, all uploaded documents not in English or German should have translations attached. The translation can be done by the applicant.

My enrollment certificate for the spring/summer semester is not available yet, what should I do?

Some universities may not provide an enrollment certificate for the spring/summer semester at the time of application. In such cases, upload your current enrollment certificate and indicate in the application that the new certificate will be available later. A valid certificate must be produced if a position is offered.

I am in the final year of my BA studies, can I still apply?

If you are in the final year of a bachelor’s study and intend to graduate before 1 July, you are not eligible for the summer school unless you can show enrollment in a Master degree in September.

I am in the final year of my Master studies, am I eligible for the summer school?

? If you are in the final year of a Master study and intend to graduate before 1 July, you are not eligible for the summer school. In such cases, you may be interested in our PhD program.

Where do I find details of the projects offered?

Check the websites of the group leaders offering positions. If interested, you can directly contact the group leader for further information on the project.

What should I expect after submitting my application?

No extra confirmation is sent upon submission. All applicants will be acknowledged after the deadline, and results should be published by 5 March. Notifications will be sent to all applicants regarding the status of their application.

I am having trouble uploading documents, what should I do?

Some PDF documents may have encoding or signature certification issues. Ensure the PDF is in the correct format or rescan. If problems persist, contact the administrator for assistance.

Why am I unable to download a PDF of my application?

Documents uploaded may not be in PDF format or may exceed 1 MB. Security settings of the PDF, especially with certificates, may also cause issues. Ensure the uploaded PDFs can be opened.

Can I apply if I am presently enrolled in a PhD program?

No, the summer school course is intended for undergraduate and Master students only.
